An extremist Marxist militant group has taken credit for a suicide bomb attack that occurred on Jan. 7 at an Istanbul police station, resulting in the death of a Turkish police officer. News provider Agence France-Presse reported the attack came just days after a violent clash between members of the group and police outside a palace in the city. The fatal bombing occurred in Sultanahmet, an area of the major European city known for a high volume of tourism from local and international visitors, close to the Hagia Sophia museum and other cultural attractions. Turkish officials are worried that these two incidents could indicate more attacks in the coming weeks and months.

The conflicts in Istanbul have thus far been centered around members of the city's police force, as the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front has targeted one of the most obvious symbols of order and authority in the area. The DHKP-C, as its known in the Turkish language, is officially viewed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. It was involved in a 2013 suicide bombing attack on the U.S. embassy in Turkey as well as incidents of varying severity around Turkish police and police stations in the past. The group has pledged to carry out further attacks, according to Newsweek.

Attacks came close to businesses, travelers

While the violence has centered around police officers in Istanbul thus far, the very nature of being in the city creates a threat potential for businesses with assets and personnel in the area. Companies that have operational centers in Istanbul or send employees to interact with other companies located around the area have to understand the importance of strong corporate security procedures and protecting their staff and their fixed assets in potentially dangerous areas.
