To get real-time data, BPD maintains technology-heavy systems, both at its station as well as in its patrol cars. Each car is equipped with a laptop and a system called NC4 Street Smart, which shows the location of calls and officers. It allows officers to communicate and report on developments in real time with other officers through blogs.

Data-driven crime center to aid Wilmington police
The Real Time Crime Center unveiled Monday uses computer software to show where officers are deployed throughout the city, share information between patrol units, and relay status updates on major investigations, Cummings said. It also allows the department's various leaders to see firsthand what's happening live from a central control room at police headquarters in downtown Wilmington.
