The 2019 Hurricane Factor

Posted on Jun 27, 2019

Hurricanes are powerful, destructive forces of nature which can rip through cities and paralyze them for months, take lives, and cause billions of dollars in damage. As these massive storm systems gather strength over warm ocean waters before moving toward land, those affected can expect anything from powerful winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges to coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, tornadoes, and landslides. Because of these serious and wide-ranging affects, supply chains, business continuity, corporate security, your organization’s reputation, employees, and other assets are all affected before, during, and after a major or minor hurricane.

2018’s above-average hurricane season brought 16 named storm systems, including Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center and other national weather centers have forecasted this summer’s storms. The season officially began on June 1, 2019—or May 15, 2019, if you’re on the Pacific coast— and won’t end until November 30, 2019.

Weather emergencies are not single incidents; rather, a confluence of events, with rivers cresting days after a storm’s landfall, and hundreds of thousands of people without power. Port closures and travel disruptions can affect organizations’ supply chains for weeks. Wide scale power outages, lack of goods and retail supplies, broken roads and travel blocks, and the safety of traveling employees are all major concerns in the tumultuous days, weeks, months—even years—after a hurricane.
