Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Answers, Why did you choose law enforcement
Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) recently said, "Every day, America's Sheriffs put on a badge and risk their lives to serve the rest of us. When tragedy strikes, they are there, literally running toward the danger to save others."
NC4 recently visited with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office and asked the question, "Why did you choose law enforcement?"
Deputy Theresa Norton recalled a person who made an impact in her life. "When I was in 5th grade, I had a D.A.R.E officer that I looked up to. The career itself is very exciting and I wanted to make a positive influence in the community," she said.
Deputy Lane Stidham began his professional career on a different path. He received his degree in journalism and communications from the University of Florida. He had worked in television production then in the insurance industry before deciding to make a change in his life. "I decided that I needed to do something better with my life, something that would give me an opportunity to serve the public," said Deputy Stidham.
For all of the officers we spoke with, the ability to help those in need and make a difference in their community were the main reasons they chose to follow a career in law enforcement. Sergeant Seckendorf said, "To know that I went through my life giving back to the community and assisting those that can't help themselves, helps me know that I did something worthwhile with my life."
