New Castle County Crossing Guards: Keeping Students Safe

The Active Transportation Alliance said, "Crossing guards shepherd us safely across the street. They keep children safe from traffic throughout the year – during wind, rain, snow and sweltering heat."

A new school year has begun and NC4 wanted to take the time to highlight the crossing guards who help our students cross streets safely, as well as share tips on how to keep school zones safe for everyone.

New Castle County crossing guard, Christina Hall, says she loves her job. Every morning and every afternoon she helps 50 to 60 children cross the street safely. She says it makes her day to see them and they are happy to see her.

"When you have a big group of kids, they are running around and you have to kind of settle them down," said Hall. "But, I do have a good relationship with them and I am glad for that because they do listen."

Hall says it is also important for drivers and other pedestrians to follow safety tips and rules. The National Safety Council has a list of tips for drivers when sharing the road with young pedestrians.

  • Don't block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic
  • In a school zone, when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection
  • Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign
  • Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas
  • Don't honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians
  • Always use extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians wherever they may be, no matter who has the right of way

NC4 would like to thank all the crossing guards and other law enforcement officers for keeping our children and streets safe.
